1. Introduction to Simple Past Tense

The Simple Past Tense is used to talk about:

Keywords: yesterday, ago, last night, last week, in 2024

2. Sentence Structure

Affirmative: Subject + Verb (past form)

Negative: Subject + did not + base verb

Question: Did + subject + base verb?

3. Regular Verbs (-ed form)

Base Verb Past Form Example
play played I played cricket yesterday.
watch watched She watched TV last night.
visit visited We visited our uncle.
Speaking Drill:
Speak 5 sentences using regular verbs in past tense.

4. Irregular Verbs

Base Verb Past Form Example
go went I went to school yesterday.
eat ate She ate rice in the morning.
see saw They saw a movie.
come came He came late.
Tip: Irregular verbs must be memorized.

5. Negative Sentences

Structure Example
did not + base verb I did not go to school yesterday.
did not + base verb She did not eat breakfast.
Exercise:
Convert 5 affirmative sentences into negative sentences.

6. Question Sentences

Question Answer
Did you play cricket? Yes, I did. / No, I did not.
Did she go to school? Yes, she did.
Did they watch TV? No, they did not.
Speaking Drill:
Ask 5 past-tense questions to your friend.

7. Short Storytelling Practice

Example:

Yesterday, I woke up early. I brushed my teeth and took a bath. Then I went to school. I studied English and played with my friends. In the evening, I returned home and watched TV.

Speaking Task:
Speak about your yesterday in 6–8 sentences.
