1. What are Articles?

Articles are small words used before nouns. They help us understand whether the noun is general or specific.

There are three articles in English:

2. Use of “A”

“A” is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.

Example Sentence
a boy I see a boy.
a pen This is a pen.
a car He has a car.
Note: “A” is used for sound, not spelling.
Spoken Practice:
a cat, a school, a teacher

3. Use of “An”

“An” is used before words that begin with a vowel sound.

Example Sentence
an apple I eat an apple.
an orange This is an orange.
an hour He waits for an hour.
Important: “Hour” starts with H but sounds like a vowel.
Spoken Practice:
an umbrella, an honest man, an egg

4. Use of “The”

“The” is used before a specific person, place, or thing.

Use Example
Specific object The book on the table
Unique things The sun, The moon
Known person/place The teacher is here.
Spoken Examples:
The sky is blue.
The boy is my friend.
