Module 4: Conditional Sentences (Real-Life & Professional Use)

1. What are Conditional Sentences?

Conditional sentences are used to talk about real situations, possible situations, imaginary situations, and past regrets. They usually contain an if-clause.

2. Types of Conditionals

Type Usage
Zero Conditional General facts & rules
First Conditional Real & possible future
Second Conditional Unreal / imaginary present
Third Conditional Past regrets & imagination

3. Zero Conditional

Structure: If + Present Simple, Present Simple

If you heat ice, it melts.
If I wake up late, I feel tired.
Used for universal truths and daily habits.

4. First Conditional

Structure: If + Present Simple, Will + Verb

If you study well, you will pass the exam.
If it rains, we will stay at home.
Speaking Drill:
If I get a job, I will __________.

5. Second Conditional

Structure: If + Past Simple, Would + Verb

If I were rich, I would buy a car.
If she knew English well, she would get the job.
“Were” is used with all subjects in formal English.

6. Third Conditional

Structure: If + Past Perfect, Would Have + V3

If I had studied harder, I would have passed.
If they had left early, they would have reached on time.
Used to talk about past mistakes or regrets.

7. Mixed Conditionals

If I had studied English earlier, I would be confident now.

Mixed conditionals connect past actions with present results.
